The side lever is designed to make control feel intuitive once you get used to its movement. In its upright position, it supplies cold water; move the lever down  to increase the temperature towards hot. To start the flow, tilt the lever away from the tap body, with the same control allowing you to adjust the amount of water released. This gives the deck mounted mixer a particularly tidy arrangement, keeping temperature and flow adjustment together without adding another handle or control.
